The world is full of things that appear complete: smartphones, games, appliances, and even works of art like films and music. Yet, in the long run, all of them remain unfinished. Eventually, something new emerges, and everything evolves.
Life is the same. I see life as a single masterpiece, and it will only be truly complete when I leave this world. From the perspective of my future self, the present me is still unfinished. Yet it is precisely because I am unfinished that there is room to shape, refine, and build. How I choose to construct myself now determines the final form I will take.
The same applies to work and creative endeavors. As a filmmaker, I have never once felt that I created a truly 100% complete piece. No matter how well received a project may be, there are always lessons: “That scene could have been better,” or “This angle might have worked differently.” I strive to improve with every new project. I will likely continue creating unfinished works for the rest of my life. And yet, it is this very unfinishedness that drives my growth and carries me to the next stage.
If I were to think, too early, that I am already “complete,” my growth would stop. As long as I feel there is still a next step, I can continue evolving. It is in that journey that the true beauty of being unfinished lies. Completion is not necessary.
To be unfinished is to still have a story to write.
